Silica Gel Begin a New Cycle with ‘Manphasickzuck’

Korean alternative rock band Silica Gel have never treated music as an isolated part of their work. Sound, artwork, storytelling and film all contribute to the same world, with the members taking an active role in shaping how each release is presented. With ‘Manphasickzuck’, that approach becomes central to an ambitious new chapter.

The track appears on Ballad of You, Silica Gel’s first full-length album in three years, released on 20 August. The record deliberately closes the door on ‘Machine Boy’, the science-fiction concept behind their award-winning second album, POWER ANDRE 99. Rather than continuing that story, the band have chosen transformation.

Its replacement is a concept called ‘Spiral Molting’, which brings together Buddhist ideas of reincarnation and the themes running through Osamu Tezuka’s Phoenix. The manga explores life, death and rebirth across stories that travel between the past and future, making it a fitting reference point for an album concerned with cycles, renewal and changing form.

That sense of rebirth runs through more than the music. The artwork, the ‘Manphasickzuck’ music video and the wider visual language surrounding Ballad of You all belong to the same creative world. Silica Gel’s members reportedly have a hand in every part of that process, from writing and performing the songs to developing and drawing elements of the project themselves.

This level of creative control gives the album a unity that would be difficult to achieve through music alone. Its visual choices are not simply decoration added once the songs are complete. They are part of how the story is told, giving ‘Spiral Molting’ a physical shape while allowing the themes of reincarnation to move between different forms.

‘Manphasickzuck’ therefore acts as more than one track from a new record. It offers an entry point into the band’s changing identity. The title, imagery and accompanying film become pieces of a larger work in which nothing appears separate from the central idea. As one era is shed, another begins to take its place.

Ballad of You also marks the first time Silica Gel have recorded an album entirely in English. That decision arrives as the band’s international presence continues to grow. Silica Gel were selected as one of the Korean representatives for YouTube’s 2026 Foundry programme, which supports independent artists as they develop their creative vision and connect with wider audiences. Their growing recognition through platforms including Apple Music places them in a strong position to introduce their work beyond Korea.

Yet the album does not appear to simplify Silica Gel for new listeners. Instead, it draws from a particularly layered collection of references, including Buddhist reincarnation, Tezuka’s Phoenix and a Silla-era legend about a flute carved from bamboo and bestowed by the spirit of a deceased king. These influences give the project roots that are historical and philosophical as well as musical.

That matters at a time when Korean music is still often introduced internationally through K-pop alone. Silica Gel represent another side of the country’s creative landscape: a band working within alternative rock while building an identity that cannot be separated from visual art, mythology and experimental storytelling.

‘Manphasickzuck’ does not simply announce another Silica Gel album. It captures a band consciously shedding an earlier form and deciding what should emerge next. With Ballad of You, Silica Gel have created a milestone shaped by their own hands, one that invites listeners to experience reincarnation not only as a theme, but as the very method behind the work.
