Sunny Daydream Creates an Oceanic Escape with “Anew World”
Sunny Daydream imagines what could come after the end of the world on the alternative pop single “Anew World”. Told from the perspective of a mermaid, the song looks towards the beginning of a kinder world where every creature has a home and access to water.
It is an imaginative idea, but one with a deeply personal foundation. Born in Nanjing, China, and raised in Langley, British Columbia, Sunny Daydream moved out at 17 and lived with roommates near the beach in Vancouver’s West End. During that time, the Pacific Ocean became a place of healing and a source of strength.
Whenever life felt too difficult and starting again seemed impossible, the water offered comfort and the courage to keep going. Those experiences flow through “Anew World”, shaping a song about survival, renewal and the hope of creating something better after a period of darkness.
The track layers Sunny Daydream’s ethereal vocals over mysterious drums and synths, with guzheng and water droplets adding to its aquatic atmosphere. Its sound draws inspiration from French Yé-yé music and trip hop, bringing together dreamy alternative pop and darker, more hypnotic production.
“Anew World” is sung in English and also includes spoken-word passages in French and Mandarin. The use of three languages gives the song a wider sense of connection, while reflecting the multicultural influences within Sunny Daydream’s work.
Sunny Daydream was closely involved in every stage of the recording, having written, co-produced and mixed the track. That creative involvement can be felt throughout the release, from its unusual concept to the small production details that bring its imagined world to life.
A lyric video accompanies the single, allowing listeners to follow the words and explore its story more closely. Sunny Daydream also commissioned Chiara Ruggiero, known as @alien_girl on Instagram, to create a custom animation for the song.
The track has already been taken beyond the studio. On 6 August 2026, Sunny Daydream performed “Anew World” at Vines Art Festival alongside dancer-choreographers Kaleidoscope Crush and Abigail Fernandes. The collaboration brought movement into the song’s world, adding another dimension to its themes of water, healing and transformation.
With “Anew World”, Sunny Daydream turns a personal connection to the ocean into a striking alternative pop release. It does not simply imagine life after destruction. It asks what kind of world could be built next, offering a hopeful vision where every living creature has somewhere to belong.
