Zachary Friederich Keeps the Fire Burning on ‘Till The Embers Are All That Remain’

New York songwriter and producer Zachary Friederich returns with Till The Embers Are All That Remain, a six-song EP rooted in storytelling, classical guitar and carefully crafted acoustic arrangements.

The release brings together moments of love, longing, resilience and reflection, with each track offering a different side of Friederich’s songwriting. His classical guitar work sits at the heart of the EP, supported by contributions from fellow musicians David Lowell, Kate DeToye and Shae Moseley.

Opening track ‘You Are Never Alone’ is a tender expression of lasting love. Its poetic lyrics and delicate guitar create an intimate atmosphere, setting the emotional tone for much of the record. ‘Dancing In The Rain’ follows with a brighter acoustic pop sound, finding hope during difficult times and choosing to make the most of life when circumstances feel uncertain.

The instrumental ‘Mint Julep’ gives Friederich’s musicianship room to take centre stage. Driven by classical guitar, the track also brings slide guitar and mandolin into the arrangement, creating a lively and textured piece that stands apart from the EP’s vocal-led songs.

‘Come Back To Me’ shifts the mood once again, leaning into a more raucous roots rock sound. Its greater sense of urgency adds energy to the tracklist while showing that Friederich’s acoustic approach is capable of carrying real weight and momentum.

One of the EP’s most affecting moments arrives with ‘Darling, I Miss You’. Described as a sombre lullaby of longing, the song is made even more personal by Kate DeToye’s beautiful backing vocals. The sound of birds recorded outside Friederich’s studio can also be heard, adding a natural detail that makes the performance feel close and unguarded.

The EP closes with ‘Costume Jewelry’, a swirling elegy for a country in decline. With echoes of Leonard Cohen in its sombre mood and lyrical focus, the track expands the record’s perspective beyond personal relationships and towards something broader and more uneasy.

Across Till The Embers Are All That Remain, Zachary Friederich allows the songs to breathe. The arrangements remain thoughtful and uncluttered, giving space to the guitar playing, lyrics and small details that shape each track. The result is a warm but melancholy collection from a songwriter who understands how much can be said with an acoustic instrument and a well-told story.
