Mick Combs ‘The Wizard’: A Spellbinding Journey Through the Seven Deadly Sins
Mick Combs, hailing from Port Pirie, South Australia, has long been immersed in the rich tapestry of mid-seventies hard rock. Influenced by iconic bands such as Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple, he developed a profound appreciation for music from an early age. Although he initially dabbled with the guitar during his youth, it was during his teenage years that his passion truly ignited, especially after receiving complimentary guitar lessons from his high school instructor, Ginger Samson. Predominantly self-taught, particularly in mastering solos, Mick dedicated years to performing with various bands, exploring genres ranging from folk and jazz to nu-metal and blues.
In 2023, Mick unveiled his debut solo album, The Wizard. This instrumental concept album delves into the seven deadly sins, with each track encapsulating the emotions associated with a specific sin. The narrative follows a wizard's quest to vanquish the demons governing each sin, a storyline originally conceived by Mick's wife, Ivy Stone. Don Douglass produced and mastered the album and contributed additional instruments to the project.
The same year also marked the release of two albums by Mega Queen, a band Mick formed with Ivy Stone. Although recorded a decade earlier, these works had remained unreleased until 2023.
Looking ahead, Mick is committed to establishing himself as a prolific recording artist, with aspirations to release a new album annually.
'The Wizard' stands as a testament to Mick Combs' musical journey. It blends his early influences with his diverse experiences across multiple genres. The album offers listeners a captivating exploration of human emotions, conveyed through the evocative language of instrumental rock.
