Spook Muziek’s 'Spook Muziek vs. JMS' – A Passionate Collision of Rivalry and Love
Sheffield’s own answer to Alex Turner, Spook Muziek, has returned with his second EP, Spook Muziek vs. JMS. This time, he joins forces with his fierce rival and long-time lover, JMS, in a collaboration that is as intense as it is intriguing. Despite the swirling rumours suggesting otherwise, Spook Muziek and JMS remain deeply enamoured with one another, and, for those wondering, the royalties are indeed split 50/50.
The creation of this EP is the result of an extraordinary writing session, one that spanned over five years, full of unbridled passion and occasional chaos. The three tracks presented in Spook Muziek vs. JMS reflect the hedonistic atmosphere that engulfed Spook HQ during this time. The pair themselves admit that they have very little recollection of the actual process, the sessions seeming like a haze. As Spook himself noted, "I felt like Marti Pellow in his prime" – a fitting description of the feverish energy that birthed these tracks.
What’s remarkable about this EP is how it seemed to materialise out of nowhere. Both Spook and JMS recall how one day the music didn’t exist, and then as if by magic, it did. This surreal journey has resulted in a collection of songs that feel spontaneous, raw, and electric.
As for the music itself, the EP captures the deep-rooted rivalry between Spook and JMS, blending their distinctive sounds into something altogether unique. Their fierce competition is evident in the energy and intensity of the tracks, but so too is their undeniable chemistry, a reflection of their personal and creative partnership. It’s not just music; it’s a dialogue, a battle, and a love story all at once.
Spook and JMS are incredibly proud of the EP and, while the process may be a blur, the result is something they are keen for the world to hear. They hope that listeners across the globe can feel the raw emotion and chaotic energy that went into its creation. Ultimately, Spook Muziek vs. JMS is an offering of passion, competition, and love that they want people not only to hear but to love.
The Sheffield scene has found a new voice – or rather, two voices locked in a compelling, creative embrace. Whether it’s the seductive swagger of Spook Muziek or the enigmatic pull of JMS, this EP delivers a vibrant clash of styles that should resonate far beyond Steel City.
