Austin Powell Finds His Groove on “Retribution”
Austin Powell introduces the next chapter of his music with “Retribution”, an upbeat alternative R&B single driven by expressive guitars and an effortlessly infectious groove.
Raised in New Jersey, Powell is a singer, songwriter and producer with a sound that moves freely between genres. On “Retribution”, that versatility comes through in the balance between warm production, rhythmic guitar work and a laid-back vocal delivery. There is an easy confidence to the track, with touches of Steve Lacy and mk.gee in its off-centre, guitar-forward approach.
Rather than relying on a huge chorus or overly polished production, “Retribution” finds its appeal in the smaller details. The guitars remain at the heart of the arrangement, while the steady groove gives the song a relaxed but purposeful momentum. It feels bright and accessible on the surface, yet there is enough texture underneath to reward repeat listens.
The single leads into Powell’s album CHALANT, a deeply personal project shaped by a period of major change. Much of the record was written while he was coming to terms with his late grandmother’s declining health. He later left Los Angeles and moved to Palm Springs to help care for her, an experience that encouraged him to explore grief, self-discovery and acceptance through his music.
Although that wider story gives “Retribution” additional context, the single stands confidently on its own. Its lively guitars and warm alternative R&B production offer an inviting introduction to Powell’s current sound, capturing an artist becoming more comfortable with his creative identity.
With “Retribution”, Austin Powell turns a period of transition into something loose, colourful and full of movement. It is a strong opening statement from CHALANT and a reminder that personal growth does not always have to sound heavy.
