Eldersea Share a Devastating Kind of Devotion on ‘The Lucky Ones’

Chicago alt-punk band Eldersea reveal a softer, more vulnerable side of their sound with their new single, ‘The Lucky Ones’.

It is the band’s first true ballad, but the emotional weight behind it is unmistakably Eldersea. Built around an unselfish form of love, the song considers what it would mean to care for someone so deeply that, given the choice, a person would willingly outlive them and carry the grief themselves. Not simply to spare them the pain of loss, but to make sure they would never have to face their final moments alone.

It is a heartbreaking idea, handled with tenderness rather than unnecessary drama. ‘The Lucky Ones’ finds its power in that quiet promise to remain beside someone, even when doing so means accepting the greater burden.

Founded by Francis “Frankie” Ciccarelli, Eldersea began as a solo songwriting outlet in his hometown of Worcester, Massachusetts. The earliest versions of the band’s songs took shape there before Ciccarelli relocated to the Chicago area and released Eldersea’s first single, ‘Stateside’, in June 2022.

The project later developed into a full band with bassist Dave Ratzek and drummer Connor Butler. Their precision and intensity helped bring Ciccarelli’s writing to life, shaping Eldersea into an outfit capable of balancing punk urgency with strong melodies and genuine emotional depth.

Musically, the band sits somewhere between alt-punk, pop punk and alternative rock. There are traces of the raw honesty associated with Alkaline Trio and Bayside, alongside the measured, cinematic atmosphere of Orville Peck. Eldersea also draws from the timeless melodies of 1950s and 1960s doo-wop and Motown, giving their music a character that extends beyond a single genre.

That combination of grit, drama and classic songwriting became clearer on the band’s second EP, Ahab. The release marked an important step forward for Eldersea, establishing the emotional and musical contrasts that continue to shape their work.

‘The Lucky Ones’ pushes that range further. Rather than relying on speed or force, the single gives its central emotion room to breathe. Its ballad form allows the band’s melodic instincts to take the lead while retaining the honesty found throughout their heavier material.

Eldersea are currently working on their first full-length album, with more new music on the horizon. If ‘The Lucky Ones’ offers a glimpse of what is to come, the next chapter will find the band exploring an even wider emotional range without losing the urgency at the heart of their sound.
