Austin Gatus Explores Bittersweet Love in “Love Can Only Take You So Far”

Soulful SoCal singer-songwriter, hopeless romantic, and saxophonist Austin Gatus has released his new mid-century soul-pop power ballad, Love Can Only Take You So Far. The track blends jazzy piano and dreamy strings with Gatus’ sultry vocals to create a sound that feels both timeless and intimate.

The song tells a self-aware, bittersweet story. The relationship it describes cannot survive without the right timing, shared goals, or being in the same city. Gatus remains in Los Angeles to pursue his musical career while his partner develops hers in San Francisco, giving the song a real-life poignancy. The chorus echoes the song’s title as a repeated chant, emphasising the difficult truth that love can only take you so far. It is a song about mutual loss and the need to focus on personal dreams while still young.

Gatus is a heart-on-his-sleeve romantic who has overcome incredible challenges, including surviving childhood cancer. A graduate of his dream school, UCLA, he has shared the stage with Harry Styles, opening at his headlining Coachella 2022 set, as well as Rufus Wainwright, Kim Dracula, MAX, Two Friends, Kenny G, Dave Koz, disco legends Average White Band, and American Idol participants Jessica Sanchez and Sophia James. He has also performed multiple times at LA Kings intermissions, even premiering an original song in the hockey arena.

His previous single, Don’t Want This to Change, collected over half a million streams across platforms and helped cement his reputation as a rising talent in modern soul-pop. With Love Can Only Take You So Far, Gatus continues to combine heartfelt storytelling with sophisticated musicality, leaving a lasting impression long after the song ends.
