‘Disco Jenny’ – Lexytron Turns Heartache Into a Funky Showdown
John & Yoko. Jack and Meg. Now it’s Lexy & Mike, a creatively offbeat English husband and wife duo who, from their adopted home in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland), are carving out a musical path as singular as it is sonically ambitious.
‘Disco Jenny’, the latest single from Lexytron, drops listeners straight into the heat of a relationship dispute, but instead of stormy silences or whispered recriminations, this argument plays out under a glitterball. “Why can’t you just tell me how you feel?” demands lead singer Lexy, delivering the line with sardonic bite as she lures her partner onto the dancefloor for a funk-fuelled, brassy showdown. It’s sharp, danceable, and unmistakably Lexytron.
Best known for her genre-defying debut album Something Blue, Lexy has taken a left turn into more electronic territory with Something New, a self-produced project recorded in Auckland and refined in London, where producer Marco Meloni handled the mixing and mastering. The result is a slick yet emotionally raw sound that fuses alternative pop rock with electronic flourishes, anthemic choruses, and Lexy’s now-signature wit and lyrical bite.
‘Disco Jenny’ is as much a sonic confrontation as a track to move to, bolstered by lush backing vocals from London-based singer/songwriter EVA and Elen Cowlishaw, a grooving bassline from Stephen Lake (of The Spicy Notes), and an irresistibly punchy trumpet performance from Welsh player Gwyn Owen (Llareggub). The track practically sweats under the tension and swagger of its brassy arrangements and emotionally charged vocals.
For fans of intelligent pop with a theatrical twist and a refusal to play it safe, Lexytron continues to deliver. ‘Disco Jenny’ isn’t just a single, it’s a dancefloor drama, and Lexy & Mike are its most compelling protagonists.
