Anna Muir Reaches Breaking Point on ‘Bonsai’

Sometimes it is the smallest things that reveal just how overwhelmed someone has become. On her new single ‘Bonsai’, Anna Muir captures that feeling through the familiar but strangely devastating experience of accidentally killing a houseplant.

Based on the UK’s south coast, Muir makes music to drive, scream and cry to. Her songwriting draws inspiration from indie-folk artists such as Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker, alongside bands including Big Thief and Radiohead. Intimate vocals, dream-like guitars and thoughtful lyrics give her music a deeply personal feel, often softened by flashes of dark humour.

‘Bonsai’ was written while Muir was struggling through university assignments and watching the smaller pressures of everyday life begin to pile up. The neglected houseplants become a sign that everything has reached its tipping point. It is a song about stress, losing control and eventually having to accept that sometimes all anyone can do is hope for the best.

That simple idea suits Muir’s honest approach to songwriting. Rather than turning the situation into something overly dramatic, she focuses on an ordinary moment that says far more than it first appears. It feels intimate and relatable, particularly for anyone who has watched minor responsibilities become impossible once life gets too busy.

The single arrives during a period of growing grassroots momentum for Muir. She recently sold out her first headline show in Winchester, won Haslemere Rising 2026 and earned a place on the main stage at Haslemere Fringe Festival. Her music has also received support from BBC Introducing.

‘Bonsai’ is the second release from Anna Muir’s forthcoming debut EP, ‘Lost on Me’. With her live presence growing and a sound built around honesty, atmosphere and sharp lyricism, the new single offers another promising look at what is still to come.
