Digging For Kanky Bring North Manchester’s Grit To “Raining Stones”

Manchester trio Digging for Kanky draw on local history and lived experience for “Raining Stones”, the title track from their forthcoming debut album. The single arrived in late October, ahead of the 15-track album, due for release on 20 November 2026.

The band’s sound is dark and atmospheric, moving between alternative music, downtempo, trip-hop and bass-heavy electronic production. Ben Powell, Adam Smith and Kat Brown build haunting melodies around rich textures and brooding rhythms, with touches of spoken-word realism and alternative hip-hop. Their influences include Massive Attack, Leftfield, The Streets and The xx, but “Raining Stones” carries a distinct sense of place.

The title refers to Ken Loach’s 1993 film, which was shot on the North Manchester housing estates where the band members grew up. That connection gives the track and album name a personal weight, rooted in the area’s working-class life and the realities of the place they call home. The title feels less like a reference added for effect and more like a way into the world the band are creating.

Digging for Kanky’s own name comes from another piece of local history: the legend of “Old Kanky”, a grave robber associated with Middleton in the 1880s. It reflects the trio’s interest in darker stories and mysterious origins, ideas that sit naturally alongside their shadowy sound.

Across “Raining Stones”, electronic production and atmospheric detail meet a grounded sense of storytelling. The result is music that balances darkness with beauty, drawing listeners into a world shaped by Manchester’s history and the band’s own perspective. As the title track, it offers an introduction to the broader world of their debut album, arriving on 20 November.
