Andrew Cushin Introduces His Upcoming EP With ‘Human Condition’

Andrew Cushin’s new single, ‘Human Condition’, offers a first look at the songs and ideas set to shape his upcoming EP, Human Conditions, due on 20 November. As the lead track, it gives listeners an introduction to the intricate songwriting Cushin has developed across the release.

The EP brings together new material and older songs Cushin has revisited. One of them, ‘Why You?’, dates back to when he was 21. He rediscovered it in an old songbook before recording the collection, giving the track a place alongside newer work.

The songs also reflect different sides of his writing. ‘Addiction’ is an emotional, personal song written around the time of his father’s passing, while ‘Smile’ is built around the kind of anthemic chorus Cushin has long aimed to bring into his music. ‘Why You?’ carries the influence of Noel Gallagher, and ‘Human Condition’ is a song he simply feels works on its own terms.

Cushin worked closely with his band during the recording sessions, and their contributions helped shape the sound of the EP. Guitarist Johnny Bond, formerly of Catfish and the Bottlemen, brings what Cushin describes as “indie magic” through his solos. Rich Smedley’s keys and woodwind parts take ‘Human Condition’ into less familiar territory.

The band will also join Cushin on the road for his headline UK tour, which begins in November and continues into December. Joe The Blow of Red Rum Club has recently joined the line-up, adding to a team of experienced musicians and performers.

For Cushin, the EP is a collection that reflects the range of his songwriting, from personal stories to big, sing-along moments. He says it will be “a joy to play live”, and ‘Human Condition’ sets the stage for what’s to come.
