Gracie Ella Refuses to Be Defined on ‘Pulling Me Away’

Gracie Ella has never been interested in fitting neatly into one genre, and her single ‘Pulling Me Away’ reflects an artist whose musical identity is shaped by contrast. Soul, jazz, neo-soul and rock all form part of her world, but none of them tells the whole story.

At the centre of the track is Ella’s soulful voice. Her university training as a jazz vocalist can be heard in the control and musical instinct she brings to her performances, yet her delivery never feels overly polished or technical. Emotion remains the priority, allowing the song to connect without losing the skill behind it.

‘Pulling Me Away’ also gives Ella room to bring together the different sides of her artistry. She is not simply a vocalist, but a guitarist, songwriter and vocal arranger with an ear for detailed harmonies. Those abilities help create music that feels layered without becoming cluttered, with each part serving the song rather than competing for attention.

The title itself captures a feeling many listeners will recognise. Being pulled away can mean losing control, becoming caught between two directions or feeling the weight of something that is difficult to leave behind. Ella approaches that emotional tension through the warmth and power that have become central to her songwriting.

Her influences stretch across several musical worlds. She grew up singing along to her mother’s Céline Dion records while her grandparents performed Italian classics in the kitchen. Her father introduced her to Rush and Guns N’ Roses, while artists such as Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Jill Scott and Lauryn Hill shaped her connection with neo-soul. Jazz and guitar greats including Pat Metheny and Lenny Breau later added another dimension to her sound.

Rather than separating those influences, Ella allows them to meet naturally. She has spoken about her desire to combine the beauty of soul music with the energy of a woman genuinely rocking out on guitar. ‘Pulling Me Away’ belongs to that same creative space, where technical ability and open emotion are treated as equally important.

Ella’s songwriting has already attracted attention from respected names including Sting, James Fauntleroy and Oak Felder. She was also signed as a songwriter to SonyATV through Twenty Seven Music in 2019, adding industry recognition to the reputation she had already built through memorable live performances around Toronto.

Still, ‘Pulling Me Away’ is most effective when heard simply as a Gracie Ella song. It does not need to be placed inside a particular box to make sense. Her voice, musicianship and emotional honesty give the track its identity, presenting an artist who understands her influences without allowing them to define her.

For Ella, music has always offered comfort and release during difficult moments. With ‘Pulling Me Away’, she continues trying to give listeners that same feeling, creating something personal enough to be honest but open enough for others to find their own meaning within it.
