Mellified Man Welcomes the Darkness with ‘Sabbath Time’
Stockholm electronic music project Mellified Man embraces the darker side of the changing seasons on the new single, ‘Sabbath Time’. Filled with haunting vocals, pop-minded synths and a heavy, sludgy bassline, the track is a Halloween anthem that refuses to wait for October to arrive.
Mellified Man began in 2019 as a way of bringing melodies from the mind into the physical world. What initially started as a creative outlet soon developed into a more serious pursuit, driven by years of inspiration from different bands and musicians. That broad range of influences continues to shape the project’s sound, which explores unusual musical territory without losing its sense of fun.
‘Sabbath Time’ captures the atmosphere of autumn rather than following a traditional storyline. Wind crashes against windows, the sky turns blood-red and the moon slowly blocks out the sun. From there, the song moves deeper into the night, introducing dancing undead, howling moons, skinwalkers and bodies charged with nitroglycerin.
These images give the track the feel of an old horror film viewed through the lens of a shadowy Stockholm club. There is a genuine sense of menace to the song, but it remains energetic and surprisingly danceable. The lighter, pop-oriented synths cut through the heavier bass, creating a contrast that keeps ‘Sabbath Time’ moving even as its lyrics become increasingly unsettling.
The vocals are especially important to its atmosphere. Inspired in part by The Sisters of Mercy frontman Andrew Eldritch, their low, ghostly presence immediately pulls the song towards gothic territory. Instrumentally, Mellified Man also draws influence from German experimental group Malaria!, bringing a colder and more angular character to the electronic production.
At the centre of the track is the repeated refrain of “Sabbath time” and “restless mind”. Its repetition turns the chorus into something resembling a ritualistic chant, reinforcing the feeling that the listener has wandered into a strange midnight gathering. It is simple, memorable and well suited to the song’s ambition of becoming a seasonal anthem.
Although ‘Sabbath Time’ has arrived outside the usual Halloween release window, its imagery is not limited to one week of the year. The song reflects the wider mood surrounding autumn, when the evenings grow longer, the weather becomes harsher and familiar surroundings can suddenly appear a little more sinister. That atmosphere gives the single enough character to be revisited when the next spooky season arrives.
A visualiser was also created for the release and used as the song’s Spotify Canvas, adding another visual layer to its eerie presentation. Rather than serving as a conventional standalone music video, it acts as a short companion to the track’s dark and restless world.
With ‘Sabbath Time’, Mellified Man finds a compelling meeting point between gothic electronics, pop synths and dancefloor-ready darkness. It may have missed Halloween this time around, but its undead energy will still be waiting when the shadows return.
