Kojo Kay Explores Anxiety and Self-Reflection on “MORETHINK”

Kojo Kay continues to build his unique musical world with “MORETHINK”, the fifth release from his self-produced debut mixtape TONEBOW. Following his EP THIS DOESN’T FEEL GOOD BEING STUCK HERE IN THE SAME SPOT :(, the track sees the artist blending personal storytelling, nostalgic influences and forward-thinking production to create a deeply introspective experience.

Throughout the creation of TONEBOW, Kojo Kay worked alongside his mentor, Juno Award-winning engineer Jamie Kuse, who contributed to the entire project. “MORETHINK” holds a special place within the mixtape, with Kuse naming it as his personal favourite due to the track’s energy and emotional impact.

The song reflects Kojo Kay’s relationship with anxiety, particularly social anxiety, exploring the constant cycle of overthinking, overanalysing and the pressure of worrying about how others perceive him. Through honest lyrics and an expressive soundscape, he captures the feeling of being trapped inside your own thoughts while searching for a way to break free.

Musically, “MORETHINK” brings together Kojo Kay’s love for 2000s pop and modern melodic rap influences with the distinctive sonic universe he has developed throughout TONEBOW. The track is driven by a restless bassline that mirrors the movement of an anxious mind, while sampled bell sounds and his signature distorted vocal synths create a comforting yet futuristic atmosphere.

The production also pays tribute to Kojo Kay’s diverse background, featuring a drum groove built around sampled percussive instruments from his East and West African roots, combined with elements inspired by his North American upbringing. The result is a genre-crossing sound that feels connected to both the past and the future, creating a nostalgic yet unfamiliar world that sits at the heart of TONEBOW.

Beyond its personal themes, “MORETHINK” explores a feeling that many listeners can relate to: the fear of judgement from others. Whether it comes from a boss, parent, sibling, friend, partner, potential love interest or even from within ourselves, the pressure to meet expectations can often influence the way people see themselves and their ambitions.

With “MORETHINK”, Kojo Kay hopes to help listeners navigate those complicated thoughts and emotions while remembering the importance of enjoying the present moment and staying true to who they want to become. Through its blend of vulnerability, creativity and genre-defying production, the track adds another meaningful chapter to the evolving universe of TONEBOW.
