Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate Unveil New EP "Smile, Smile, Smile"
Eclectic progressive band Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate have released their new Smile, Smile, Smile EP, offering the first taste of their forthcoming album Parallel Lives, which is due for release in September.
Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate are known for combining progressive rock, alternative rock, classical influences, experimental sounds and electronic elements to create music that is both imaginative and unpredictable. Their previous albums have received critical recognition, featuring in album-of-the-year selections and recommendations from publications including Prog, Classic Rock and Mojo magazines.
The band consists of Malcolm Galloway, who handles vocals, multi-instrumentation and production, and Mark Gatland, who contributes bass, Chapman Stick, backing vocals, additional guitar, keyboards and co-production. Together, they have developed a distinctive sound that blends intricate musicianship with thought-provoking themes.
The EP’s title track, Smile, Smile, Smile, was inspired by Philip K. Dick’s novel Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said. The song explores ideas of identity, memory and uncertainty, reflecting the novel’s story of a famous and privileged celebrity living in a police state who suddenly finds that nobody recognises them and that their existence appears to have been erased. Facing the possibility of being sent to a forced labour camp, the character’s experience inspires this intriguing and atmospheric track.
Smile, Smile, Smile is one of Malcolm Galloway’s favourite tracks from the upcoming Parallel Lives album, and the band is looking forward to performing it live.
The EP also includes two exclusive instrumental tracks that will not appear on the album. The first is a chilled, jazz-influenced piece centred around guitar, while the second takes a more playful and energetic approach, featuring a range of guitar and synthesiser solos.
The Smile, Smile, Smile EP offers a preview of what to expect from Parallel Lives and highlights the band’s continued ability to blend complex ideas with adventurous, engaging music.
The EP is available now via Bandcamp and Spotify, while Parallel Lives is available to pre-order through Bandcamp.
Following the critical success of their previous releases, including recommendations in Mojo and Classic Rock magazines’ critics’ picks of the year, Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate continue to create music that challenges convention while rewarding curious listeners.
