Veda Rays: "True Agency" and the Sound of Displacement Reframed

Veda Rays makes ethereal indie rock rooted in dream pop, post-punk and traditional shoegaze, with lyrics that explore liminality and abstraction, channelling subconscious impulses into the present moment. Across its development, the project has built a distinct voice through years of steadfast experimentation, shaped as much by process as by outcome.

True Agency is the first single in a new release cycle that has been years in the making. It began as a bittersweet farewell to Brooklyn following an abrupt displacement during personal and wider societal upheavals in 2021. What started as a direct response to that rupture gradually evolved into something more reflective, as the material moved through questions of displacement and change rather than staying fixed in the moment of loss.

The new songs that emerged from this period do not attempt to restore what was disrupted. Instead, they reckon with what it means to be unsettled and how identity shifts in response. Over time, the writing became clearer and more measured, shaped by distance and continued reflection rather than immediacy alone.
