Ryan Dsouza and “Raggedy Ann”: A Story of Dual Identity, Sound, and Storytelling
Ryan Dsouza is an independent artist, singer-songwriter, and producer based in Vancouver, originally from Mumbai. He is a self-taught musician whose work blends pop, soul, reggae and 1980s influences. His songwriting is shaped by life experience and travel, and he brings a distinctive perspective shaped by balancing a creative music career with a corporate executive role at a leading Canadian company.
He began his musical journey performing as a lead vocalist in cover bands, where he developed his stage presence and versatility by interpreting a wide range of material live. His live performances typically feature a mix of original songs and carefully selected covers, often framed with personal storytelling. Through his “Behind the Vibe” series, he also shares the inspiration and meaning behind his songs, giving audiences a closer look at his creative process.
Ryan is also co-founder of Artist Launcher, a platform designed to support independent musicians and improve discovery for emerging artists. The initiative reflects his broader commitment to helping indie artists navigate the challenges of visibility and growth in today’s music landscape.
“Raggedy Ann” is a collaboration project between Ryan Dsouza and songwriter John Selleck. The song was inspired by a vision of a homeless woman living life on her own terms, defined not only by hardship but by resilience, dignity and quiet strength. The character at the centre of the song is shaped by circumstance but remains unbroken, and the writing focuses on presenting her as fully human rather than reduced to assumption or stereotype.
The lyrics are written in a stylised dialect to reflect her voice and lived experience, placing the listener directly into her world. One reference, “Mad dog e wait at de corna,” refers to MD 20 20, a low cost fortified wine associated with street survival, adding realism and depth to the narrative.
Musically, “Raggedy Ann” blends reggae and blues influences into a soulful fusion set in G minor at 78 BPM. The arrangement combines reggae inspired rhythm guitar with organ, piano and expressive lead guitar phrasing, creating a cinematic and emotionally rich atmosphere. The vocal performance is intentionally shaped to fit both the lyrical character and the reggae roots influence of the track, with subtle phrasing choices that support the storytelling.
At its core, “Raggedy Ann” reflects themes of perspective and humanity, focusing on how strength and dignity can exist beneath outward appearances.
