Def Manic’s "NO DRAMA" Shows a Focused Step Forward in Experimental Hip Hop
Based in Brooklyn, New York, Serbian hip hop artist Def Manic has built a steady reputation in the experimental hip hop space over the last few years. Now 25, he has already released more than seven projects, showing a consistent drive to develop his sound and push his creativity forward.
His earlier work helped set the foundation for where he is today. The EP Extrovert has accumulated over 200K streams in total, while his more recent EP 3MOTIONS has drawn increased attention, particularly thanks to the single Suave Girls, which was featured in a mobile video game. Alongside these releases, he has put out two mixtapes, Retrospect and Curious Tales, as well as a full-length album titled D.R.A.W. (Do Right & Win). Following a sold-out album launch in 2014, he toured Australia and continued building an international audience.
His single Stuck In The Moment also played a key role in expanding his reach, receiving radio play across Australia, Canada, the United States and France. It also appeared in viral YouTube videos such as Insane Football/Soccer Skills, which reached 1.3 million views, Football is Awesome with 350K views, and a Brandon Loupos feature video with 270K views.
Over the years, Def Manic has shared stages and bills with artists including B.o.B., Twista, Souls of Mischief, A Tribe Called Quest members Phife Dawg and Ali, and Scribe from New Zealand. He has also headlined shows in Japan and Thailand, and more recently performed in New York City at venues such as Knitting Factory and S.O.B.’s. In 2016, he secured his first US publishing deal with AIA, marking an important milestone in his career.
His latest release, NO DRAMA, continues this trajectory but with a more restrained and focused energy. The track reflects a clear intention to strip things back and avoid unnecessary noise, instead concentrating on control, clarity and direction. Rather than relying on chaos or overstated themes, it keeps things tight and deliberate, which fits naturally into his evolving sound.
Within his catalogue, NO DRAMA stands as a simple but confident statement. It does not try to overreach, instead reinforcing the idea that consistency and focus can be just as powerful as intensity.
