The Hellflowers and “Fucked Up Nation”: Punk Energy for a Disconnected Age

Formed in 2015 in Los Angeles by Christina and Matt Eskew, The Hellflowers have developed a reputation for delivering urgent, high-energy rock music rooted in punk tradition but shaped by a modern sense of frustration and momentum. Their sound draws from the melodic edge of Blondie and the attitude of The Pretenders while carrying the rough, direct spirit of Ramones and The Clash.

At the centre of their recent work is the track “Fucked Up Nation”, a song that captures the band’s response to a world they see as fractured, loud and increasingly unstable. It does not try to soften its message. Instead, it leans into tension, using driving guitars and a raw vocal style to reflect anger, confusion and a sense of social overload. In live settings, the song has become one of their most powerful moments, often setting the tone for the rest of the show.

The Hellflowers have released two EPs and a full-length album, with a second full-length record scheduled for release in March 2024. Across their catalogue, “Fucked Up Nation” stands out as a clear statement of intent. It is less about polish and more about impact, reflecting the band’s commitment to direct and unfiltered expression.

They are also known for their strong support of underground punk, garage and rock and roll scenes. Their live performances are fast, intense and deliberately unpolished in places, creating a sense of immediacy that connects strongly with audiences. Rather than performing at a distance, they push for engagement and reaction, which has helped build a loyal following.

Their touring history includes shows across the West Coast of the United States, Mexico, Paris and the United Kingdom. They are set to return to the UK for a headline tour, including a performance at Rebellion Festival in 2024. The festival is a natural fit for their style, bringing together established and emerging voices in punk music.

Over the years, The Hellflowers have shared stages with a wide range of acts including The Avengers, Missing Persons, Michael Des Barres, Agent Orange, The Dickies, CH3, The Muffs, and Gene Loves Jezebel. These appearances reflect both their versatility and their place within the wider alternative rock circuit.

Their music has also reached beyond the underground at times. The track “Come On, Let’s Dance!” was featured in the 2017 season finale of Vanderpump Rules, giving them a brief moment of mainstream exposure without shifting their core identity.

Even so, it is “Fucked Up Nation” that best defines The Hellflowers today. It reflects their outlook, their sound and their approach to performance. It is direct, uncompromising and built for impact, capturing a band that continues to channel punk energy into a modern, unsettled world.
