Maxell’s “Looking Back” Signals a Striking New Voice in London’s Synth Underground

Maxell may be a relatively new name in London’s music scene, but the trio already sound like a group with far more history than their short time together suggests. Based in London and drawing on experience from earlier bands and projects, they bring a sense of confidence and cohesion that gives their music real presence from the outset.

Their new single, Looking Back, released on Wednesday, 15th April, is a strong early statement. Built around a synth-driven core, the track has a dense and immersive quality that gives it an almost psychedelic intensity. It feels layered and slightly disorientating in places, with a texture that recalls the more atmospheric side of underground electronic music in the capital.

There is a sense of familiarity in its influences, though nothing feels directly imitated. Listeners might detect echoes of Portishead’s shadowy mood, Broadcast’s experimental edge, and The Sundays’ melodic softness. Rather than leaning heavily on any one of these comparisons, the track blends them into something more fluid and less easy to pin down.

The closing section of the song stands out in particular. As it moves into its final passage, the track becomes more expansive and reflective, allowing the synth work to stretch out and the atmosphere to deepen. It gives the impression of a band more interested in mood and progression than conventional structure, with the outro carrying much of the emotional weight.

Early signs suggest Maxell are not aiming to fit neatly into any single category. “Looking Back” positions them as a band working with atmosphere, memory and texture, shaping a sound that feels considered and distinct even at this early stage.
