Mellified Man Unveils “Funky Fox Time” – A Darkly Playful Tribute to a Cult Classic

From the shadowy synth depths of Stockholm, Sweden, comes Mellified Man, the electronic music project created by Rocky Zainthrain, also known as Risky Tan. Known for exploring the darker edges of electronic music, Zainthrain’s latest single, “Funky Fox Time,” blends the mechanical with the mystical in a haunting yet playful way.

Mellified Man’s music covers a wide range of electronic styles, from experimental synth to Electro-industrial, Darkwave, Synthwave, EBM, and even some Techno and Synthpop. In “Funky Fox Time,” this mix of influences comes together to create a track that is both atmospheric and cinematic.

The song is inspired by the character Foxy from the popular horror game series Five Nights at Freddy’s, first released in 2014. Instead of focusing on the franchise’s horror elements, the track imagines Foxy having fun while the pizzeria is closed. The character moves around, tries playing Bonnie’s guitar, and enjoys himself without causing any trouble.

Musically, the track opens with synthesizers playing a clear melody, supported by a dominant bass line created on a classic Minimoog. Small guitar sounds are embedded throughout, capturing Foxy’s playful attempts at music. The title’s reference to funk is reflected in the track’s groove, adding a lively rhythm to the otherwise metallic sound.

The style draws heavily on Synthwave and 1980s movie soundtracks. Slow EBM undertones give the song a mechanical edge, creating a dark but cinematic atmosphere. The track also includes background noise and playful samples, such as Foxy singing “dum dibi dum dum,” arcade sounds, and air hockey effects, giving it the feeling of a living, breathing space.

“Funky Fox Time” serves as a musical tribute to the Five Nights at Freddy’s series, similar to Mellified Man’s earlier track “Animatronica”, but with fewer lyrics and a stronger focus on instrumental storytelling. Its release comes in time for the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 film in 2025, following the 2023 adaptation.

The track demonstrates Mellified Man’s ability to combine experimental sounds with narrative and emotion. It is dark, mechanical, mystical, and just a little bit funky, offering a fresh perspective on a well-loved video game world.
