Tripendicular Releases “Kiss Yesterday”: A Kaleidoscope Rock Revival

Todd Groemling, better known by his mostly solo project Tripendicular, has unveiled his latest single, Kiss Yesterday, a compelling new track that demonstrates his knack for blending creative exploration with heartfelt songwriting. A U.S. singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Todd has spent the year remarkably prolific, releasing nine solo songs alongside four tracks for his music duo, my infatuation.

Known for embracing both solitary and collaborative processes, Todd relishes the challenge of playing all instruments himself while layering vocals, yet he equally enjoys collaborations where he can focus on crafting vocal melodies and lyrics, contributing selectively to the instrumentation. These varied approaches fuel his creativity, enabling him to experiment with different musical styles while maintaining his signature sound, a genre he calls kaleidoscope rock. This style often employs layered textures to heighten moods and draw listeners deeper into the sonic landscape.

Fresh off receiving radio airplay in Britain for tracks that lean towards synth-pop and new wave, Todd was keen to return to a more traditional setup of guitar, bass, and drums, accompanied by vocals. For Kiss Yesterday, he teamed up with Philippe Pansard, a talented French bassist and drummer. The song emerged as a ‘from the ashes’ composition, with both Todd and Philippe offering their skills to a guitarist seeking collaborators but ultimately not being selected. Rather than letting Philippe’s impressive foundation go unused, Todd crafted a new guitar part and added a twist in the second verse, incorporating different drums and bass lines. The result is nothing short of a phoenix rising, a vibrant, layered track that showcases their synergy.

Ironically, while the music brims with energy and momentum, the lyrics tell a more introspective story. Todd’s words explore the difficulty of moving forward, serving as a lyrical plea to “kiss yesterday goodbye” and “take hold of your steering wheel.” The juxtaposition of upbeat instrumentation with reflective themes exemplifies Tripendicular’s ability to marry complexity with accessibility.

Kiss Yesterday reaffirms Todd Groemling’s commitment to musical exploration, whether through solo endeavours or collaborative efforts. With kaleidoscope rock at its core, the track is a testament to the power of resilience, creativity, and the enduring joy of making music that both challenges and inspires.
