Mistrust Shines a Light on Port Sunlight with Debut Album 'Sunlight'
Tim Blackburn, who records under the name Mistrust, released his debut album, Sunlight, in early 2023, a record already recognised for its originality and heartfelt concept. Later that year, Mistrust headlined the Future Yard Showcase, showcasing his talent as a captivating live performer.
Fun fact: Mistrust has been using his music to make a difference. Sales from his Yellow and Grey EP have helped to preserve a historic train, and he has also raised awareness for homelessness through a charity single released in collaboration with Primal Live.
Originally released in July 2023, Sunlight was reissued on vinyl in September 2025 via EastLondon Recordings, featuring two bonus tracks for fans to enjoy. The album is believed to be the first ever inspired by Port Sunlight Village, the historic workers’ village in Wirral, UK, offering a modern reflection on its past and present.
The album opens with the title track, “Sunlight”, which begins with the ethereal sound of a church choir before giving way to a powerful synth build-up and a steady electronic beat. A catchy hook ensures listeners are instantly drawn in. This is followed by “Life”, a melancholic composition featuring a heavy electronic pulse and a stirring synth solo, perfectly capturing themes of reflection and the passage of time.
Other standout tracks include “Yellow and Grey”, a favourite at Mistrust’s live shows, and “S.O.A.P”, which blends spoken vocals with another irresistible hook, showcasing the artist’s knack for marrying storytelling with infectious electronic rhythms.
The concept behind Sunlight reflects Mistrust’s journey to Port Sunlight and his impressions of the village: how it came to exist, how it has evolved, and how it resonates in the modern world. Themes of life, death, and growing old weave through the album, alongside a contemporary interpretation of the original call for people to come to live and work in Port Sunlight.
With Sunlight, Mistrust offers not just an album, but a musical journey into history, memory, and community, all delivered with his signature electronic flair. For listeners seeking an album that combines thoughtful storytelling with captivating electronic production, Sunlight remains a standout release.
