Laylo’s “Roots”: A Journey Through Identity and Belonging

Uzbekistani indie artist Laylo is making waves with her debut EP Roots, a project that reflects her unique cultural perspective and musical sensibilities. Recognised as a OneBeat 2025 winner, Laylo has furthered her artistic journey as a Batyr Lab resident in Kazakhstan, where she received a grant to bring this album to life. Her single “Home” has already gained international attention, airing on Sirius XM in New York, USA.

The EP’s focus track, “Half-Blood,” stands out as a contemplative exploration of identity in an age shaped by self-isolation. Laylo dedicates the song to the melancholy experienced by those in whom multiple nationalities, mentalities, and cultures intertwine. Through her lyrics, she conveys the difficulty of “choosing a side,” the sense of loneliness, and the ongoing search for belonging.

Musically, Roots balances a light and airy sound with jazz motifs, polyphonic vocals, melodic storytelling, and contemporary production. The result is an immersive atmosphere that invites listeners to reflect on the complexity of identity while embracing the quest for harmony. Laylo’s work captures a delicate interplay between personal experience and universal emotion, establishing her as a distinctive voice in the indie music scene.

With Roots, Laylo presents not only her musical talent but also a heartfelt narrative that resonates across cultures and continents. It is a debut that promises to mark the beginning of an exciting artistic journey.
