Milltown Brothers Return with New Single 'Time to Move On'

The Milltown Brothers are back with a new single, Time to Move On. It is the third track to be released from their forthcoming sixth studio album, Boogie Woogie, which arrived on 12 September through the Last Night From Glasgow label. The single is being used as the lead track for the record and will be familiar to fans who have followed the band’s steady return to the spotlight over the past two years.

A Band with History

The group first emerged from Colne and Lancaster in 1989 with the Coming From The Mill EP. Praised in NME, it set the stage for their rise. Their second single, Which Way Should I Jump, triggered a major label chase that saw them sign to A&M Records in 1990. Re-recorded for release, the track reached number 38 in the UK charts and later climbed to number 10 on the Billboard US Rock Chart.

Their debut album Slinky was released in 1991 and quickly earned classic status. Praised for its sharp writing and balance, it received a maximum five-star review in Q Magazine. A follow-up, Valve, appeared in 1993. Gary Crowley of Capital Radio described its closing track Cool Breeze as one of the best songs of the year.

Over the years, the Milltown Brothers have kept their focus on melody and strong songwriting. Rubberband (2004) was described by Record Collector as a faultless third album. Long Road (2015) showed a more reflective side and drew warm reviews, with XSNoise giving it 8/10 and Louder Than War 8.5/10. In 2020 the band released Stockholm. Backseat Mafia called it one of their favourite records of the year.

Resurgence and Renewal

Like many artists, the pandemic put their live plans on hold. The return came in 2023 with a sold-out show at The Trades Club in Hebden Bridge, which gave the group fresh energy. Since then they have played to sold-out rooms again, including their first London show in twenty years and a well-received set at the Shiiine On Festival in 2024. More recent highlights include London’s Lexington and the 100 Club, along with a slot at Manchester Gorilla as part of Tim Burgess’s May 2025 Merch Market.

Boogie Woogie and Beyond

The new album Boogie Woogie has already been given four stars by the Daily Express. It is available on two vinyl editions, CD and lossless download from Last Night From Glasgow. Time to Move On leads the release, capturing the band’s knack for indie hooks combined with heartfelt lyricism.

Upcoming shows include:

  • 5 December: Colne Municipal Hall

More dates will follow in support of the album. There is also the release of a new book on the horizon. And Jesus Danced (Twice) – The True Story of the Milltown Brothers by Nigel Wood will chart the full story of the band.

Looking Ahead

Time to Move On signals another confident step forward for the Milltown Brothers. With a rich history and a strong new album, the band remain as relevant and inspired as ever.
