Infatuation: Todd Groemling and Giles Gerry’s Modern Take on 80s-Inspired Music
In 2023, U.S.-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Todd Groemling (GREMM-ling) found himself growing weary of the songs from his then-solo project, tripendicular, often falling on deaf ears. Yet, he knew he had something to offer. Determined to prove it, Todd leapt at the opportunity when he discovered UK-based multi-instrumentalist Giles Gerry (Gurry) searching for a singer.
It was not long before Todd and Giles realised they shared more than a mutual affection for 80s new wave icons such as The Cure and Duran Duran. Together, they crafted a handful of original tracks, weaving electric guitar, synthesisers, and frequent electric bass into a sound they felt was sorely underrepresented in contemporary music. The synergy between them was undeniable, and the logical next step was to formalise their collaboration as a duo.
The name they chose reflects the heightened emotions of infatuation, a stage Todd frequently explores in his writing. Despite the irony that it took some time before they began releasing music, their first offerings finally emerged in 2025. Alongside their releases, they have been steadily building a presence on social media, though they prefer to lead with the music rather than their images. For Todd and Giles, the priority is for listeners to connect with the music itself, not the persona behind it. This approach diverges from the norm, but they hope it will foster genuine appreciation.
The track Single, One Step Closer exemplifies this approach. Todd drew inspiration from the sophisticated interplay of electric guitar and synthesiser, layered over the bold, in-your-face drumming Giles meticulously assembled, much like a chef crafting the perfect dish. Lyrically and vocally, the song captures a delicate balance: an acknowledgement that things may not be perfect, yet a sense that one is one step closer to everything falling beautifully into place.
With a sound that honours their influences while forging its own path, Infatuation are steadily carving out its space in today’s music scene, proving that sometimes it is the slow burn that becomes a blazing bonfire.
