PLANET OPAL Return with Bold Double Single “Indigo Skies & Montagne A Colori”

Italian experimental duo PLANET OPAL, the brainchild of producer and multi-instrumentalist Giorgio Assi and drummer Leonardo De Franceschi, continue to defy convention with the release of their latest double single, “Indigo Skies & Montagne A Colori”, out now via Dischi Sotterranei. Following the surreal and much-discussed single “I’ve Heard Brian Eno in the McDonald’s Fridge”, which earned praise from international tastemakers including the BBC, this new release cements their reputation as fearless architects of a genre-bending, emotionally charged sonic universe.

Emerging from a creative spark ignited during a 2018 trip to Corsica, PLANET OPAL have built a sound that merges the rhythmic intensity of krautrock, the raw energy of dance-punk, and the immersive textures of experimental electronics. Their music thrives on contrasts - structured grooves unravel into spontaneous improvisations, layers of sound oscillate between ecstatic highs and tense restraint, and hypnotic repetition is routinely disrupted by unexpected ruptures.

Their latest offering is no exception. “Indigo Skies” is a near five-minute English-language track that dives deep into the inner turmoil of illness - not as something to be battled, but accepted. The verses tumble forward in a chaotic stream of consciousness, creating a claustrophobic tension that ultimately breaks into a defiant, cathartic refrain. It’s a moment of clarity and resistance, a sonic exorcism of societal pressure.

In contrast, “Montagne A Colori”, sung in Italian, takes listeners on a kaleidoscopic journey inspired by a trip to Brazil. Psychedelic in tone and composition, it channels krautrock’s urgent pacing to evoke a dreamlike disorientation. Lyrics hover in abstraction, caught in a mantra-like refrain that feels like a half-remembered dream - evocative, elusive, and oddly grounding.

Since the release of their debut album Cartalavonu in 2021, PLANET OPAL have made waves with their kinetic live shows, which pair high-octane performances with entrancing visuals. From Italian festivals like MI AMI, Sherwood, and Villa Ada (supporting Pendulum), to international stages such as MENT Festival in Ljubljana, Mondo Festival in New York, and a standout set at Transmusicales in Rennes, the duo has proved time and again that their appeal crosses both genre and geography. Their opening slots for artists like Calibro 35, DJ Khalab, Niños du Brasil, and Populous further showcase their growing influence within the electronic and alternative scenes.

In 2023, their EP 46AB081222 / Do We Know Time? led to an extensive 24-date tour across Europe, including prestigious venues like Fuse in Brussels and a key support slot for Peter Hook of Joy Division and New Order fame at Goa Boa Festival. The duo has also been tapped as early announced performers for the Spring Attitude Festival 2025, set to take place at La Nuvola in Rome this September.

With their second full-length record, Recreate Patterns, Release Energy, on the horizon, PLANET OPAL continue to push the boundaries of what electronic music can be - intellectually sharp, emotionally resonant, and always danceable. “Indigo Skies & Montagne A Colori” offer a compelling glimpse into this evolving world, one where every beat pulses with intention and every soundscape invites deeper exploration.

As anticipation builds for the full album, one thing is certain: PLANET OPAL are not just part of the scene - they’re actively reshaping it.
