Eva Via’s ‘Gringa, Mas Afuera’: A One-Act Surf Rock Opera That Demands an Adventure
Eva Via, a psychologist, surfer, and musician, has finally released her highly anticipated surf EP Gringa, Mas Afuera - though calling it an EP almost seems inadequate. In reality, this collection of songs plays out more like a one-act rock opera, bursting with energy, adventure, and unexpected twists. Imagine Yes battling in a surf competition with a Disney princess, and you’ll begin to grasp the essence of her sound.
A Genre-Defying Musical Journey
The second track, Me Gusta Queso, is as playful as it is musically rich. A surf rock duet laced with unexpected Western influences, it tells a love story that transcends language barriers - well, almost. The charm of the lyrics is undeniable, but what truly makes this song stand out is its creative instrumentation. From woodblocks and guiro to literal coconuts making a surprise appearance in the second and third verses, every percussive element feels intentional and delightful. A particularly audacious vibes-slap extends for several measures, while the bassline - dripping with Latin groove - grounds the entire piece. It’s less of a traditional rock song and more of a flowing musical journey, evoking the sensation of drifting down a river rather than looping around a race track.
Then comes I Cannot Come for You, an absolute masterclass in musical misdirection. What begins as a dreamy bolero, complete with romantic melodies and tender lyrics, soon takes a turn that listeners won’t see coming. Ukrainian guitarist Vitaliy Tkachuk delivers electric guitar work that soars, while Brazilian flutist Yuri Villar injects a Jethro Tull-meets-Julie Andrews energy, making for a combination as unexpected as it is thrilling. Throw in a touch of Nashville pedal steel, and the result is a track that is as unforgettable as the journey that inspired it.
A Bittersweet Farewell
Closing the EP is an ode to Costa Rica, a Crosby, Stills & Nash-inspired rock tune that acts as both a celebration and a reckoning. Surfing Witch’s Rock, swimming with sharks in Uvita, watching lava flow at Volcán Arenal - the song encapsulates the magic of adventure, only to introduce a bittersweet complexity in its final moments. True to the nature of a great musical, it doesn’t tell listeners what to think but leaves them contemplating long after the last note fades.
With Gringa, Mas Afuera, Eva Via has crafted more than just a surf EP. It is a vibrant, genre-crossing narrative that invites listeners to laugh, cry, dance, and reflect. And, most importantly, it dares them to embark on adventures of their own.
