Kate Prendergast’s New Single ‘Lavender Country’ – A Journey to Peace
Kate Prendergast, a fifteen-year-old alt-folk musician and singer-songwriter from County Meath, continues to make her mark on the music scene with her latest single, Lavender Country, released on 31st January 2025.
A talented vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, she plays piano and guitar while learning bass and drums. Her sound is rooted in folk but incorporates influences from country, blues, jazz, and rock, creating a distinctive and evolving style.
Kate first gained attention with her debut single, Past Letters, recorded in her home studio. The track received notable radio play across Ireland and the UK, attracting the interest of John Dinsmore, formerly of the Beat Poets. Recognising her songwriting potential, he introduced her to producer Declan Legge of Analogue Catalogue Studio B, known for his work with artists such as Jealous of the Birds and Vera. This collaboration led to the recording of her second single, Undergrowth, with drummer and bassist Darragh Tibbs lending his talents to the track.
Following the success of Undergrowth, Kate and Declan decided to work together once more, resulting in Lavender Country. This new release sees her take a different approach, stepping away from the drums in favour of a more gradual build-up. This allows the song’s mood to shift from wistful reflection to cautious hope before culminating in a feeling of upbeat optimism. The track explores the challenge of navigating life’s uncertainties in the search for inner peace and balance.
At its core, Lavender Country is a song about escaping what Kate describes as ‘the jail cell they call the worried mind’. Through thoughtful lyricism and delicate yet purposeful instrumentation, the track captures the universal struggle of finding tranquillity amidst life’s complexities.
With Lavender Country, Kate Prendergast continues to establish herself as an emerging voice in the alt-folk scene, crafting music that resonates deeply with listeners.
