Firebird Union Release Captivating New EP 'Lightning Storm'
Firebird Union, a transatlantic electronic indie band bridging the musical worlds of London and Los Angeles, have released their latest EP, Lightning Storm. Brothers Ross and Matt Churchill, the creative forces behind the project, seamlessly blend the finest elements of British and American indie music. Their unique sound is a captivating blend of modernised synths and guitars, drawing inspiration from the likes of Noel Gallagher, Fleet Foxes, and HAIM.
For those familiar with the Churchill brothers’ musical journey, Firebird Union represents the culmination of decades of shared creativity. Hailing from the vibrant Watford music scene, the duo performed together in their formative years as part of the band Cedar, alongside local talents such as The Staves, Mohair, Kyla La Grange, and Lower Than Atlantis. These early experiences helped them develop a keen sense of stagecraft and refine their expansive, melodic songwriting, which touches on themes of existentialism and personal reflection.
Although the brothers parted ways in 2008 to explore individual musical paths, both continued to make their mark on the industry. Ross co-founded the electronic duo Pariis Opera House, receiving airplay on BBC Introducing and BBC 6 Music, while supporting major UK acts like Example and Zane Lowe. His solo work, under the moniker Hyper Lion, earned accolades from Tom Robinson, and he went on to co-produce Constance’s debut LP for Lakes. Matt, meanwhile, pursued his own solo career, releasing music that garnered attention from BBC 6 Music and local radio stations. He has also been involved in fundraising efforts for Watford charities and collaborated with local artists such as Roberto Cappellina and Minnie Birch.
Now, after years of working independently, Firebird Union marks a reunion for the brothers, and Lightning Storm is the perfect showcase of their evolved sound. Produced and recorded entirely by Ross and Matt in their personal studios—Admiralty Studios in London and The Gatehouse in Los Angeles—the EP is a testament to their lifelong musical partnership. Even with an ocean between them, the bond of siblings and a shared vision has allowed them to craft a collection of songs that are both deeply personal and sonically expansive.
The title track, “Lightning Storm,” is a powerful reflection on the unpredictability of life. The song delves into the idea of never quite knowing where you’ll end up, and how nostalgia for the past can shape your understanding of the present. At its core, the track explores how life can change in an instant—perhaps by fate, perhaps by chance—and the importance of embracing that uncertainty rather than letting sentimentality hold you back. Musically, it’s a soaring anthem driven by electrifying synths and shimmering guitar lines, capturing the very essence of Firebird Union’s cross-continental sound.
The EP is rounded off with the B-side, “Friday Hill,” a track that offers a gritty, relatable narrative about the daily grind and societal pressures that often feel insurmountable. It’s a song about resilience, fighting to get through the week, and the forces that seek to keep you in your place. The track’s raw energy, paired with the duo’s distinctive melodic sensibilities, ensures that it stands out as a thought-provoking companion piece to “Lightning Storm.”
With Lightning Storm, Firebird Union continue to build on their legacy, taking full advantage of the creative freedom that time, experience, and technology have afforded them. The brothers’ songwriting partnership, one forged in the fires of family and the shared pursuit of artistic expression, feels more potent than ever. As they continue to bridge the gap between their transatlantic influences, Firebird Union proves that time and distance are no barriers to creating meaningful, powerful music
